Some of us had problems with our data structures, with lost partitions, folders and files but there are people who have their data storage neat and tidy for years. How is this possible, some may ask? Are they some data experts or what? I researched this topic on web and found some crucial things which are essential for quality data storage.

First thing is that your machine is physical in good ambient. Top notch servers are in climate controlled rooms without dust and other tiny particles that might damage sensitive computer parts. Of course your desktop is nowhere near that conditions but you at least might get your space tidy. Also electrical current is important. Buy UPS to stabilize your electricity variations. Static electricity might affect your data. New carpets or other electrified fiber might damage you data so buy fabric softener and spray on it.

Back up your data on external storage if you have resources. Recover your data from tape, optical storage or hard drive if something happens. It is important that you copied it somewhere. If your disk starts to make strange noises it is time to back up everything. Just in case. It is only matter of time when you will be stuck with your computer. Keep important documents at more than one place. Be sure that you have my documents copied to other location on hard disc bad sectors show up right on that place of disk where your important files are. You would have copy of them written on other sectors.

Of course use anti-virus software to check new files you downloaded because viruses can be deathly weapon to files, they can delete modify them and so on. Critical files are always encrypted and stored on many places such are removable storage, DVD, CD, USB Flash memory, Tape, external magnet discs and so on…

Browsing all around web I found this great freeware and want to inform you about it. It can recover your data after file delete or even drive format. It works on hard disk drives as well as USB flash disk removable hard drive or memory cards. Wide range of file formats are supported with this great app like Microsoft Office files, mp3, video files like AVI and WMV and many others. Software is easy to use and you will get fine with its user friendly graphical interface.

It is easy done in few steps like selecting undelete module, selecting drive, and finally selecting files you want to back up and confirming action. If you are more experienced user you can enter Advanced recovery module with other advanced options. This software like many other works only if files have been deleted. If you have overwritten files it is much harder process and this software won’t work . This application is free for 30 days and it is just enough to retrieve your missing or deleted files. After that period you can buy program which costs $79.99, $69.99 or 119.99 for professional, personal, or commercial licenses. There are other cool apps which are full freeware meaning you can use them free for life. You can search and find some cool recovery apps here.

We will discuss here about email recovery process. If you have accidentally deleted some important emails, don’t panic. Here are some easy tricks that will bring back your important messages. Almost every email client has deleted emails or trash folder because some emails are deleted by human mistake rather than machine or program failure. This is similar to recycle bin in windows operating system and it kind of temporary memory storage. All desktop clients have that and almost all web clients like Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and others have that. Try searching for phrase you remember from message topic or even from email body. It is very possible you will recover mail if it’s in trash.

If files are deleted from trash folder, they are still on disk but invisible for user. Try searching for them in recycle bin at first place. If you can’t find mails in recycle bin best shot is to install some recovery software and search entire hard drive for emails. Do that quickly because most of the recovery software will find files which are deleted. But if they are overwritten it is good chance you lost them expect you are some computer wizard. There are many recovering tools on the internet and the cost is quite different.

All software supports some operating systems and some not. Choose one which supports email recovery and your operating system and which is not very expensive. If you only need to recover deleted email don’t buy expensive ones that have many other features because cheaper will to the same thing. One of small compact programs that support only email recovery is Data recovery wizard and only works with Microsoft Outlook. Before you buy software carefully read description and choose best thing that fit your needs.

You have just started your laptop and realized that something’s wrong. Your hard disc failed to start. You must be asking yourself if laptop recovery can be done just like on desktop hard disc. Yes it can be done and it is not so difficult as you think.

If you want to access your data you must take hard disc out of your laptop. Most laptop models have screws on back side where memory disc and other parts can be found. Unscrew part where hard disc is located and pull it out.

Most hard discs are 2.5” so you will have to buy 2.5” hard disc enclosure. It depends of interface which enclosure you will buy. If your hard disc is PATA, SATA, or SATA2 you will have to buy proper enclosure. PATA disc goes to PATA enclosure and so on. Transfer over enclosure will be a little slower because USB 2.0 supports 480 mbits/s while regular SATA2 discs go up to 60-70 Mbytes/s. I’m not going into that if your PC has only USB 1.1 support. That would be very very slow. If your enclosure and PC have eSATA support that would be ideal. External SATA is just like your hard drive is plugged in computer’s mainboard.

No matter how expensive your computer is there is a moment when it might die and leave you with serious problems. There are of course redundant systems and expensive configurations but those are built for high end servers and hosting where up time must be 99.999%. Regular users have one hard disc or couple and they are not into raid stuff and redundancy architectures.

What happens if system dies in small company or private agency. The business dies too because all data running the business is gone and only if there is backup ready and technical people there problem can be solved. So running data backup from time to time is very good thing for you and your business.

Time is very important factor and continuing your work or business depends on it. Let’s say system crashed and you don’t have hard disc backup ready for rescue operation. What would you do to get your system running in shortest possible time? I have worked on that issue for years and I can say that lot’s of actual software on the market can do the magical trick and help you big time. Few things are crucial for small business owners. Do daily or weekly backups on DVD, flash disk or network backup on other machines.

If your backups and machine are gone then try with software but it is better to have more copies to prevent additional job. Buy instant file recovery program that will do the job you need. You can get some bootable disc version or installation where you must connect hard drive to other working computer and rescue data from other working operating system.

People become aware of problems made with their data loss after they realize that data is really lost. They had chance to protect or back up their important files but problem is visible after the files are gone.

First thing is that people believe if they own brand new disc they are one hundred percent secure and that data backup is not necessary. All of us have bought sometime electronic device which is brand new but it does not operate somehow. Product is under warranty and we get our money back or new product instead. Just like in case with brand new device our disc may broke down in first week of use. You are left with blank screen or some error messages and you don’t know what to do.

Next thing is that people who do backups think that they are perfectly safe. This is questionable topic because some people do data backups once in a month, some to once in a week and some do backups on daily basis. You really need to check how important your information system is and how many backups you need in what time. Working with documents, mp3 files and other data is one thing and for example streaming video for surveillance systems is other thing and you have to decide when are you going to do backup. Different kind of data, different time schedule.

Next thing is RAID issue. You think that if you have RAID configuration you are safe. Well that is true in some cases and in some is just not true. The worst thing is that if you have RAID-0 configuration you think you are safe. This is the worst scenario because RAID-0 mode uses two hard disc controllers and all data is written parallel on two hard discs at the same time. This naturally affects on probability of hard disc failure, not just doubling the time but probability is squared. Best thing is RAID-1 because it creates identical copy of hard disc to other hard disc. Probability of failure here is only if both of discs die at the same time. RAID-5 and other modes require data regeneration which takes some time and you are not able to use your data right away.

When major failure happens you can start to use recovery techniques described in articles on this blog in order to save everything that can be saved. Recognizing failure signals is important because it is best to backup or save your data before failure.

When you work with memory of any kind you have to do everything with caution. Panic reactions and quick solutions will probably be bad like any computer solution.

Backup your data frequently like I always say. If anything is suspicious don’t try to force power up because you can do more damage. Especially if you hear some sounds coming from your hard drive. Pack your disc and send it to PC service. Remember that you should pack it properly in box like when you bought it. It should be in original box with anti static bag. Best choice is foam rubber because of static electricity. Paper, plastic bags and other things are bad for magnet drive.

Don’t expose your hard drive to extreme hot or cold temperatures, keep it on risky places like movable objects like chairs or books. If you get your disc wet or burned take it to data specialist immediately.

Data loss is very sensitive topic and it depends on many factors in your environment. Sometimes it can be done very easy and sometimes it is just impossible. The reason lays in fact that all kind of physical memory can be damaged in many kinds of ways. The boot sectors may be deleted but the files are still there, optical disc may be scratched on surface or magnet disc may be dropped down from 10th floor where data recovery is almost impossible. It’s a very rare thing but really, physical memory can be broken down and data recovery is out of question but in most cases with useful tools you can find here and little knowledge you can easily recover your data.

Backup is one very important thing. Everybody knows what backup is but just in case you don’t, backup is process when you save your data to other location just in case first location is unavailable. This means that copying your hard disc data from time to time to other hard disc or other type of physical memory is backup process. Your system of backup may include optical storage like CD’s, DVD’s, HD-DVD’s, Blu-Ray’s , magnet tapes, chips, flash, solid state, magnet drives and other types of popular storage technologies. You have to choose what is best for you and repeat process on daily, weekly or monthly basis. This whole story about backup is important because if you have backup you don’t need recovery at all.

Take job in your hands with retrieving your data or pay professional company to do it? If you have good technical knowledge you better do it yourself because you will save lots of money. But if you are not familiar with all kinds of operating system, memory and data structure things don’t try it because it is very possible that you will fail.

Your operating system has got some tools for data recovery. Almost all newer operating systems have sophisticated tools that manage logical or human errors and keep your system clean. It is easier if you use professional software for data recovery because it works above operating system, not forwarding system calls for data management but controlling the data flows itself. If you don’t manage to rescue your files with operating system tools browse and install some of professional programs which will help you if you use them wisely.

If you accidentally erased your flash usb stick, don’t panic! There is solution to recover your files. Disk digger is very useful software for doing such things. Not only flash disk recovery is supported in this powerful utility but many more memory types like memory cards, internal or external hard drives. You can set up only certain file types to be scanned, whole hard drive, or only specific sectors of your hard disc. It is very useful because it works with all file types and wide range of removable mediums. It is also very small only 660k.
